Shelf, TV Mount and Furniture Installation in Rochester, NY
Our handyman hangs shelves, mounts TVs, installs curtain rods and door hardware, and assembles furniture in Rochester homes. What holds the item up is behind the wall, so we find the studs first. If the job needs a wire inside the wall, we say so.

What is behind your wall decides the job
| Wall type | Risk | What we do | Call someone else when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drywall over wood studs | Anchors alone can pull out | Find the studs and fasten into them | Wiring or pipes run behind the spot |
| Plaster over wood lath | Plaster cracks if drilled wrong | Check first, drill pilot holes, choose the fastener | The plaster is loose or crumbling |
| Brick or concrete | Needs masonry fasteners | Use masonry anchors and the right bit | The wall is damp or flaking |
| Hollow wall, no stud in reach | A heavy item will not hold | Hang only light items, or add backing | You want a wire hidden inside the wall |
A TV mount must go into studs. The Sanus mount manual says drywall alone will not hold the TV. It calls for wood studs at least a nominal 2 by 4, fasteners at least 16 inches apart, and four lag bolts that are not over tightened. That mount is rated for 125 pounds on wood studs. Always follow the manual that comes with your mount. Many Rochester homes are old, and NeighborhoodScout reports that more than half were built before 1940. Those homes often have plaster over lath, which needs extra care.

Where installation ends and electrical work starts
Running a power wire inside a wall is electrical work. If you want a TV with no visible cords, ask us first. We tell you what we can do and when a licensed electrician is needed. Some minor tasks may be allowed, depending on the work and local requirements. Gas lines, electrical panels, new circuits and major plumbing work should be handled by the appropriate licensed professional. We explain when a licensed trade is needed before work starts.
Installation questions
Can a TV mount go into drywall alone?
No. The Sanus manual says drywall alone will not hold the TV. The mount needs wood studs.
Do you find the studs?
Yes. We locate the studs before we drill, and we check for wiring and pipes in the area.
Can you hang shelves on plaster walls?
Yes, with care. Plaster over lath can crack, so we drill pilot holes and choose the fastener for the wall.
Do you assemble furniture?
Yes. We assemble beds, desks, shelving and cabinets, and anchor tall pieces to the wall if you ask.
Do you install light fixtures?
Some minor tasks may be allowed, depending on the work and local requirements. We explain when a licensed electrician is needed before work starts.
